CYCLISTS were greeted with some glorious summer weather just outside Wellington for the first event in the new Drakenstein Super Cycle Road Series.

The series caters for all Cycling South Africa age categories, with a fun ride for those not so serious cyclists.

It was the team of Cape Town Market that dominated the first event of the open category series. The open category bunch was 45 cyclists strong.

The open race (Juniors, Under 23 &Elites) was over a distance of 117km. Anton Wynand of Team Cape Town Market was allocated the first position when 4 of the team got away from the main bunch and stayed away until the end of the race. Tredoux Odendaal, Daniel Heyns and Stefan Ihlenfeldt came in 2nd, 3rd and 4th respectively.

To crown this, the Junior section was also won by a Cape Town Market cyclist, young Kyle Donachie. He crossed the finish line in 6th position overall. Second Junior was Matthew Merington (Toyota CycleLab) and 3rd Junior was Emile Jacobs (Toyota CycleLab).

In the u.16 category Brent van Rooyen (Rhadsport) took the win over Dino Daniels.

Jean Claude Jantjies won the under 14 category convincingly, while Alexander Parsons was the first under 12 rider to finish. Jantjies crossed the finish line with a big advantage over second placed Graeme Ockhuis and third placed Lee-Arthur Green.

The organisers’ vision with the new Drakenstein Super Cycle Series is to create a platform for local riders to excel in the sport. Many youngsters have the vision to be competitive in Europe and in the international cycling arena. It is then also essential to create events similar to those overseas.

The next event in the series will be on 8 May. Details will be announced soon.

The series will also be extensively covered by the Boland Cycling Union website (www.bolandcycling.co.za).
