Regional team tastes victory
2010-04-29
IT was a historic game for the Paarl regional rugby team on Saturday, playing their first game in the Western Province Premier League against Van der Stel. In a game where the lead changed hands four times, the Paarl side eventually came a away with a 22-17 win. Strong runs from the loose-forwards Thaamir Moerat and Genovan Cornelissen meant the Paarl side’s pack remained on the front foot. Cornelissen played out of his shell, at times gaining 20 metres with breakaway runs, with Moerat being dominant in the line-outs, ensuring good, clean ball for Paarl’s backline. Tries were scored by Paarl’s Jaco Simonse (wing), Jonwin Fortuin (flank), Uren Kulsen (wing) and Wilfred Solomons (wing). Moerat and Cornelissen were jointly named man of the match. The Paarl Region manager, Ganief Dulvie, was happy with his team’s performance and would like to thank all the players and administrators who made this possible. * On Saturday, Paarl Region plays Macassar at the Dal Josaphat Stadium.
