Thousands at Safari Half-Marathon

Thousands at Safari Half-Marathon

2010-04-29

MORE than 10 000 runners and walkers will take to the streets of Wellington on Saturday for the annual Safari Half-Marathon.

Entries have closed and it is down to business as some of the country’s top athletes will compete in either the 21,1km half-marathon or 10km walk, as well as the brand new relay event (2 by 10,5km), on Worker’s Day.

There is also a 5km fun run, which participants can pre-enter or enter on race day.

The half-marathon and relay events both start at 07:15 in Willem Basson Road next to the Boland Rugby Stadium, while the 10km walk has a later start at 10:00 in General Hertzog Boulevard.

The 5km fun run starts at 07:10. All races finish at the Hugenote High School in Wellington.

This popular Boland road-running event hosted by the Wellington Athletics Club and Wellington Rapportryers, always attracts some of the province’s top runners and is consistently voted one of the best half-marathons in the country.

The top athletes will be competing for prize money totalling R34 000, with the half-marathon offering incentive prizes of R1 000 each for the first man and woman to cross the finish line in New Balance shoes and R500 each for the first man and woman from Wellington Athletics Club.

Sanbona Wildlife Reserve in the Little Karoo has provided a luxury two-night stay for two as a lucky draw for participants who purchase a pair of event socks from the official charity, Mums for Wellington. Runners can also donate to the charity, to be included in the lucky draw. This charity provides much needed support, education and care for disadvantaged children in the area.

Walkers, fun runners and beginners, as well as the serious runners, are encouraged to come out and support this event and to bring their family and friends along to enjoy the day and join in the post-event festivities. Crèche facilities are provided for children free of charge.
