Public viewing area in the balance
2010-04-29
THE public viewing area (PVA) for Drakenstein during the 2010 WorldCup hangs in the balance. Although an estimated R4 million is required to erect this venue in Paarl, the Drakenstein Municipality has only R1,2 million that was originally budgeted, available. “We cut the budget to the bone to look for money, but nothing was available,” a member of the financial department said. Now the 2010 Committee wants to get its hands on money from the upcoming (2010/2011) budget, to set up the PVA. Councillor Arthob Petersen, chairperson of the 2010 Committee, suggested that funds from the 2010/2011 budget be accessed. Mayor Charmaine Manuel said at last week’s Mayoral Committee meeting that the community would blame Drakenstein Municipality if nothing comes of the planned viewing area. “We have to look at it again and we have to be creative. We will miss a great opportunity. “Lots of people are not in a financial position to afford tickets or to travel to Cape Town’s viewing areas.” Municipal manager Dr Sidima Kabanyane said that they owed this to the community and would have to look at affordable options to host the PVA.
