2010-04-29
ON Friday an entire Franschhoek wine farm, including a wellknown restaurant, award-winning guest-house and spa, as well as a state-of-the-art winery and adjoining vineyards, came under the auctioneer’s gavel. Bidding started at R20 million and climbed rapidly as an intense bidding war broke out between three interested buyers. The final bid eventually came from Jan Harmse, a Gauteng businessman, who was elated with his purchase. It was knocked down for R53 million. Set a mere four kilometres from the heart of Franschhoek, this 22-hectare property comprises an award-winning homestead featuring six luxuriously decorated suites, an acclaimed spa, the Klein Genot Restaurant, a new purpose-built, 150-ton winery, as well as extensive organic orchards. Comments Rael Levitt, CEO of Auction Alliance: “This auction presented a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to own one of the Western Cape’s finest estates, which consists of a top local wine estate, as well as an exclusive fine dining restaurant, a luxurious boutique hotel and a highly acclaimed spa. The new purpose-built, 150-ton Klein Genot winery comes complete with valuable imported equipment that proudly rolled out its maiden harvest of red varietals in 2007. Stemming from just over 20 hectares of vineyards, the young, modern wines have earned a well-respected reputation amongst wine connoisseurs and consumers alike, achieving some of the highest of wine accolades possible. The estate’s very first vintage had the distinction of gaining special recommendation from the Wine of the Month Club and receiving a whopping four stars from John Platter the first time around. The estate is planted with Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz and Merlot vines.
