New life for rescue workers

NEWLIFE Bikers’ Church, under the leadership of Esri Malan, last week surprised the Paarl Metro Services when they handed rescue equipment worth more than R12 000 to them. Malan and his wife, Susan, are often alerted to accident scenes in which motor cycles have been involved, to deliver counselling. “We could not help but notice that there was a need for equipment, especially new mountaineering ropes, for the emergency services. “After having spent many moments watching rescue technicians painstakingly perform their duties, we thought that we should give something back to them.” There are four mountain passes in the area, Du Toit’s Kloof, Franschhoek Pass, Bain’s Kloof Pass and Paarl Mountain, which are often used by motor cyclists. Each year approximately ten accidents are recorded here. Often motor cyclists plunge down cliffs and it takes hours of rescue work to bring them back to safety. Malan hopes that their donation can ease the task of rescue technicians. The Newlife Bikers’ Church is an international Christian association which has branches in 35 countries. Although they are focused on the motor-cycling fraternity, ministering at rallies across the country, they are also focused on the family. Other projects which the Bikers’ Church are involved in, is their annual Blanket Run which takes place next Sunday, 16 May. During this run, the church collects blankets to warm the needy during cold winter months. Not only motor cycle enthusiasts are invited to participate, but anybody who has any form of wheels is welcome. Vehicles get together at Paarl Mall at 10:00. Thereafter the entourage proceeds to Meyerskraal, where they join in a fun-filled day for the whole family. Newlife Bikers’ Church meetings take place every Sunday at On Tap in Jan van Riebeeck Drive at 18:00 for 18:30. For more inquiries, contact 082-962-6269.
