Thousands turn up for housing meeting

Thousands turn up for housing meeting

2010-05-13

THE overwhelming turnout of at least 2 000 people at the information session on gap housing held on Tuesday 27 April at the Community Hall in Paarl is a clear indication of the great local need for housing.

The development in Groenheuwel, in association with the Provincial Government of the Western Cape via its Department of Local Government and Housing and the Drakenstein Municipality, aims to provide further housing opportunities to the middle-income sector.

Local middle-income salary earners were invited by developers, Shatel, to attend a meeting last month on the procedure of applying to purchase their own home at the project (erf 16161 in Groenheuwel).

The land is being made available to Shatel, to establish a residential area of at least 1 200 residential units to cater for middle-income earners.

Attendees were requested to complete and submit an application form which will be processed to determine the affordability status of the aspiring home-buyer.

The gap-housing market accommodates people earning a joint income between R3 500 to just over R15 000 and they are also eligible to qualify for up to 104% home-loans from the banks.

Shatel has developed extensively in Paarl. Its residential developments such as Sonstraal, Mount View and Palmiet River have not only aided in the alleviation of the lack of housing in the Paarl region, but have also provided homes that were developed and constructed to a comfortable standard.

People who have not had the opportunity to submit an application form for the Groenheuwel project to determine affordability, may visit the offices of Shatel at 135 Lady Grey Street, Paarl (opposite Checkers) and bring along their ID documents and recent payslips (weekdays 08:30-16:00).
