Boschendal sells brand

Boschendal sells brand

2005-09-15

THE Boschendal wine brand, considered an icon in the wine industry, has been acquired by the wine and spirit producer and distributor Douglas Green Bellingham (DGB) for an undisclosed amount.

The winery, cellar, production facilities and sales/tasting centre on the farm are subject to a long term 99 year lease.

The sale of the winemaking section came as no surprise, as the new owners of Boschendal are focusing on the development of property on the estate.

Boschendal estate, which was sold to a consortium by Anglo American for R323 million in 2003, will continue to manage the vineyards which extend over 344 hectares.

The total estate of 2240 hectares is owned by a consortium of foreign investors (70%) including MD Clive Venning and a local empowerment group (30%) led by Chris Nissen.

In terms of a supply agreement, DGB will work with the Boschendal viticulturist, winemakers and vineyard management team.
DGB plans to expand Boschendal's wine exports to the UK and US.
