Local riders perform

THE Western Province Road and Time Trial Cycling Championships was hosted this past weekend at the Windmeul Primary School, Agter Paarl. Cyclists participated in the different age categories from under 12 to veterans. The main event, the Elite/u.23 race over a distance of 125 km, was won by Moolman Welgemoed of the Daikin team. The u.23 event was won by the national rider Jim Songezo of Life Cycle Academy. The junior road race was won by Victor Grobbelaar, with local rider Emile Jacobs coming second and Hannes Basson third. All three cyclists are from the Toyota Super Cycling team. Local riders Jean Claude Jantjies and Graeme Ockhuis finished first and second re-spectively in the u.14 road race. Third was Carl Bonthuys. Jantjies also went on to win the u.14 time trial event on Sunday. In the u.16 road race André van Vuuren, Ryan Walker and Berthal Gertze finished first, second and third respectively. Paarlite Bradwin Daniels (Peco) won the u.16 individual time trial event on Sunday, where he finished at least two minutes ahead of his closest opponent.
