Perfect conditions in local canoe race

THE WCCU canoe race on the Berg River between Paarl and Wellington, which took place in perfect weather conditions, kicked off at the Paarl Canoe Club on Saturday. The race was won by Milnerton’s Lance King, who completed the senior men’s division of the 23km route in 1 hour 32 minutes 22 seconds, with Heinrich Schloms (Paarl; 1:33:26) coming second and Graeme Solomon (Peninsula; 1:33:29) in third place. Marisa Pretorius (Milnerton; 1:55:00) won the senior women’s category. Helene Rabie (Paarl; 2:02:06) and Jemma Hofmeyer (Peninsula; 2:04:59) came second and third respectively. Joseph Williams of Paarl won the junior division in 1:43:13, with Michael-Lee Farringer (Bridge House/Paarl) and Luke Stowman (Paarl) second and third. Herbert Conradie of Paarl won the Veterans division in 1:45:01 and Giel van Deventer won the Grandmasters division in 1:54:12. Other Paarlites who performed well, are Mynhardt Marais (3rd in Sub Masters) and André Rabie (2nd in Sub Grandmasters).
