Fighting drug abuse in schools

Fighting drug abuse in schools

2010-05-27

LOCAL schools are invited to get involved in a forum launched by the Paarl Association of School Governing Bodies to fight problems among the youth such as increasing drug use and cell phone related pornography.

A workshop on the initiative will be held at Ebenezer Primary on Saturday 5 June from 09:00 to 14:00, in which social workers will be involved.

Dr Joachim Jacobs of UWC recently addressed the Association on the problem of substance abuse.

At the meeting it was stated that drug abuse is highly stigmatised, therefore schools do not report such cases, for fear of tarnishing their reputations.

Parents of children who are involved in substance abuse, often remain in denial, hoping that the problem will go away, until it is too late.

Among the projects of the forum is the organisation of holiday programmes that vulnerable children can be channeled to.

Schools who wish to become involved, can contact Alvira Kleinhans (076-703-3164) or email jsitzer@pgwc.gov.za.
