THE Drakenstein Municipality says it is committed to making the 2010 Soccer World Cup a reality for the local community by ensuring a public viewing area at the Boland Cricket Stadium.

Yet accreditation for a public viewing area has not been obtained from Fifa (Fifa regulations stipulate fan parks in stadiums require accreditation, even when such an event is staged for charity. Only accredited products may be sold there).

Drakenstein Municipality has budgeted R1,2 million for the public viewing area, but all indications are that almost R3 million will be spent on the event. The tender was allocated to Inkanyezi Marketing, a Cape Town company specialising in event management.

The Municipality plans for spectators to watch all the first round Bafana Bafana games (11, 16 and 22 June) and also the quarter-finals, semi-finals and the final free of charge (a total of eight viewing days) in tents on the cricket pitch, with a big screen.

The viewing area makes it possible for members of the public to view the games in a festive atmosphere, with musicians performing, youth soccer games and fun.

Schools in the Drakenstein region are invited to enter teams for a five-a-side soccer tournament and they will be able to meet prominent soccer ambassadors.

Schools wishing to participate in the tournament can contact Enid de Wet on 072-130-3140.

The viewing area will open from 13:00 until 22:00 on 11, 16 and 22 June and again on 2, 3, 6, 7 and 11 July. Refreshments will be on sale.
