Return of the `smouswa'

Return of the `smouswa'

2005-09-22

ON Heritage Day this year, instead of a festival, De Poort Heritage Centre is launching its “Smouswa” or Trader’s wagons.
Three horse-drawn carts will set off at 10:00 from a central point in Paarl and fan out into the community including Paarl East, Paarl Central and North, Mbekweni and Wellington.
Along the way, they will stop and children will be invited to join in heritage games, while musicians will play for the adults. The carts will wend their way through the suburbs of Paarl and Wellington until late afternoon.
This is the initial promotion of De Poort’s Craft Development Project to advertise what will become a monthly event.
At the end of each month, De Poort plans to promote a specific craft direct to the public.
Quality heritage style crafts will be for sale direct to the public from these “smouswaens” as was done in the old days. It is hoped that this will also become a tourist attraction.
