Stampede as train sparks
2010-06-04
THREE commuters were injured on Friday morning, when they were waiting for their train to arrive at Mbekweni railway station. The drama unfolded when a freight train caused an electrical malfunction between Dal Josaphat and Mbekweni stations shortly after 06:00. When the train entered Mbekweni station, the sparks from the overhead electric cables caused panic on the crowded platform, sending commuters scattering to the exit. Three people sustained light injuries in the stampede. Trains were thereafter delayed for two and a half hours and buses were arranged to transport passengers between affected stations. This incident comes barely a month after passengers travelling by train from Cape Town to Mbekweni were also injured, when a fire started in the conductor’s carriage.
