FARM workers from the farm Hartebeeskraal near Paarl were recently treated to a play staged by the Africa Centre for HIV/Aids management.

A division of Stellenbosch University, the Africa Centre has developed the play in association with the Farm Health Project, an initiative run by the Stellenbosch Hospice that aims to promote access to healthcare for those who live and work on farms.

Called “Lucky the Hero”, the play’s core message is providing information about how HIV/Aids is spread, preventing infection and managing the illness if you test positive.

The play also aims to dispel some of the myths and stigma that surround this disease.

Immediately after the play workers were afforded an opportunity to be tested not only for HIV, but also for a range of other health issues, including hypertension, diabetes, Hepatitis and TB – the service is part of the Farm Health Project and completely free of charge.

Project Co-ordinator Diane Evans says, “The idea behind the Project is to provide early diagnosis of illness so that conditions can be managed and individuals can remain well and productive.

“Over the past year we have seen over 2000 people, of which 1 934 consented to voluntary counselling and testing.”

And the service doesn’t stop there - the Farm Health Project also provides support to those who need it after they have been diagnosed.

“We refer people to the most convenient provincial health services and provide ongoing care and back-up where necessary,” says Diane.

She concludes, “We strongly believe in improving the lives of farm workers in the winelands area, and through the Farm Health Project are committed to empowering individuals from a health and health awareness perspective.”
