IN order to manage their programmes effectively, non-profit organisations (NPOs) must have the ability to attract, secure and retain funding, and to apply sound management principles and good governance.

The outcome of this is likely to be effective delivery of services to their clients.

To this end, the University of Stellenbosch Business School (USB) will present a programme for the development of management skills for managers of non-profit organisations from 6 to 8 and 12 to 14 October.

Scholarship applications are invited for those who cannot afford the fee of R1200.

“This is what USB’s study programme is about,” says Brian Abdoll, chairman of the USB alumnus committee that organises the programme as a social investment endeavour.

“It aims to promote social development and education in South Africa by enhancing managerial effectiveness, service delivery and good governance in the NPO sector.”

According to Dr Therese Fish, also an alumnus of the USB and a senior lecturer at the business school, this certificate programme is targeted at current and potential managers of NPOs who have no formal qualifications in management.

“The programme specifically focuses on non-profit organisations, which concentrate on the alleviation of social ills.

"NPOs in the environmental or recreational sector are therefore excluded,” she points out.

The six-day course, to be held at the USB’s Bellville Park campus in Bellville, covers the areas of Business Computer Applications, Financial Management, Principles of Project Management, Marketing, Environmental Scanning and Business Plans, as well as the Legal Environment for NPOs.

The fee of the Management Programme for NPOs is R1200 per person.

This includes tuition fees, study material and light lunches.
Applications for scholarships are invited.

A one-page personal motivation, endorsed by the candidate’s organisation, should reach the USB by 22 September.
