Wanted: top exporter of the year
2010-06-10
EXPORTERS, both big and small, have been invited to enter the annual Exporter of the Year competition run by the Cape Chamber of Commerce and sponsored by Absa. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the competition and the 10th time it has been sponsored by Absa. Joe Emeran, President of the Chamber, said the aim of the competition was to promote exports and to recognise the achievements of local exporters who often succeeded in the face of tough global competition. Past winners had proved to be innovative and imaginative with a number of enterprising small companies coming to the fore. “Our manufacturing industry has been through a difficult time and exporting has been challenging, but we are confident that many companies have excelled in the adverse circumstances and we look forward to honouring them,” Emeran said. “It is in the hard times that some of the best new ideas emerge because we are compelled to look for better value and more cost-efficient ways of doing things,” he said. “We are expecting some pleasant surprises when this year’s entries come in.” The closing date for entries is 6 August and the names of six finalists will be announced on 14 August. They will all be present at the gala dinner at the Westin Grand Arabella Quays Hotel on October 14 for the announcement of the winners. The main award, the Absa trophy, will go to the company that meets the judge’s criteria for commitment to exporting. There will also be awards for the best non-manufacturing company, the best exporter in the engineering/manufacturing sector as well as the smaller exporter.
