A NUMBER of motorists were left stranded on Monday morning, when a metal joint popped up on the surface of the viaduct on the N1 near the Huguenot tunnel. The metal bar allegedly popped up when a truck drove over the bridge, and the section ended up on the road surface. At 07:00, the light was still weak and motorists were unable to see the gap in the road surface,or the metal bar. At least ten vehicles fell victim to this object, leaving them with more than one shredded tyre, as well as damage to their vehicles’ axles, shock absorbers and rims. Local tow-truck companies had a field day salvaging these vehicles. One of the victims, André le Roux of Du Toit’s Kloof, said that at first he did not know what had hit him. “I just heard a massive thud and then my tyres were flat.” It was only when he got out that he spotted the cause of the damage. Motorists who are now blaming this incident on poor maintenance on the part of South African National Road Agency (Sanral), expect to be remunerated for the damage done to their vehicles. “It just won’t be fair for us to pay an excess of R2000 or more on our insurance. “It is the company that runs the toll road’s responsibility to maintain it. They will have to pay for the damage.”
