Sportathon at Paarl Mall on Youth Day will raise funds for charity
2010-06-10
A FUNDRAISING Sportathon will be presented at the Paarl Mall on Wednesday (Youth Day) at the Edgars/Truworths courtyard by Rock Community Care. Competitors on treadmills, gym bikes and stair climbers will be there from 09:00 to 17:00, exercising their way to raise financial support for the community projects that Rock Community Care is involved in. The competitors are being sponsored by friends, family and community per kilometre or time period spent exercising. Some of the cyclists will be riding the entire duration of the event! All gym sporting equipment has been provided by Virgin Active for this event as well as other sponsorships. Face-Off competitions of power and endurance can be signed up for on the day, with competitors receiving Virgin Active gift bags. Raffles with wonderful prizes will also be held on the day so that onlookers can stand a chance to walk away as winners! This is going to be a fun-filled time for all! Local support and participation ensures the continuation of the vital work which Rock Community Care is involved in across the Paarl Valley! Credit card facilities will be available on the day for donations made towards this worthy cause! Rock Community Care is a Paarl based Not-For-Profit organisation which touches and uplifts the lives of so many in the local community in practical ways. Among their projects is the Pregnancy Crisis Centre, a pro-girl centre offering free counselling and pregnancy tests to girls as well as ongoing support for the baby for the first two years. Advice for adoption, post abortion counselling as well as ante-natal classes are also offered. Their Community Action Teams assist and support subsistence level organisations including an old age home, a pre-school, a home for abandoned, abused and HIV positive children, a support group for HIV/Aids patients, and many other initiatives. “Flipside” is a computer centre offering free internet access allowing IT skills development and research facilities for high school and tertiary scholars, only 8% of whom, statistics show, have access to computers at home. Life Skills programmes are also active in various high schools across the valley. For more information on how you can get involved in the Sportathon as a competitor, or how to get involved in the vital work of Rock Community Care, contact their offices on 021-872-7935 or visit them at 27 Berg River Boulevard, Paarl.
