First Ubuntu Teen Film Festival a success
2010-06-17
EIGHT small movies, written, performed and made by teenagers, were screened in the Oude Libertas Auditorium outside Stellenbosch on 9 May. This celebration, the first Ubuntu Teen Film Festival, was a collaboration between Distell and LivingIt, a non-profit organisation committed to create a platform for teenagers to express their hopes, ideas and dreams for a different future. The entries varied from a music video and small features to documentaries. The movies were made by teenagers, most of whom were first timers who had to borrow cameras, wrote the scripts themselves, taught themselves how to edit, make subtitles, and did whatever it took to get their products on screen. LivingIt hopes to expand the project slowly, but believes it can eventually become nation wide. “For us every entry is important,” says Geldenhuys. “The true magic lies in the making of it, as we wish to awaken our future movie makers to the power they have to make a difference.” Teens that are interested in a workshop for scriptwriting in the next term to enable next year’s entries, or schools interested in entering for next year’s festival, can e-mail LivingIt@vodamail.co.za or phone 021-851-5791 for details.
