EIGHTY or so canoeists were treated to perfect weather, albeit on a fairly low Breede River, when they raced in the second annual Viljoensdrift Wacky Wine Route K1 canoe race over the 26 kms between the Goree Weir and Viljoensdrift recently. A leading group of eight paddlers, including Paarl’s Heinrich Schloms, set the tone from the start of the senior men’s race. Eventually it was Pierre-André Rabie (Maties) who came out on top in 1 hour 49 minutes and 03 seconds, with Peninsula’s Graeme Solomon (1:49:07) and Schloms (1:49:14) fighting it out to the end to finish second and third respectively. In the Senior Women’s event Jemma Hofmeyer claimed the women’s honours, with Milnerton’s Robyn Henderson in 2nd place followed by Paarl’s Helene Rabie, in 3rd. Paarl Canoe Club’s junior paddlers put in a very good showing with u.16 paddler, Luke Stowman racing to an excellent 11th position overall, his club mate, albeit an u.18 paddler, Joseph Williams coming home in 15th position, whilst another Paarl u.18 junior, Diviano Pieterson, was the third junior home in 23rd position overall. ) The 28 km Gouda to Bridgetown K1 canoe race, held on a full Berg River recently with 116 canoeists competing, was won by Graeme Solomon in 2 hours and 10 seconds, with Schloms finishing just one second behind Solomon, and Rabie coming in third (2:02:12). In the junior ranks, there was a considerable upset when the first three u.16 paddlers home, Michael-Lee Farringer, Luke Stowman (both Paarl) and Daniel Pretorius (Milnerton), were all in front of their u.18 counterparts - Marisa Pretorius (Milnerton), Diviano Pieterson and Emile Minnaar (Paarl). ) On Sunday 30 May the WCCU K2 canoe marathon championships (postponed due to poor weather earlier in the month) were held at the Arrieskraal Dam, on the Palmiet River, Elgin Valley. The main event of the day, the Senior Men’s Open, was won by the K2 duo of Lance King (Milnerton) and Sean Rice (Peninsula) in 1:56:44. Ernest van Riet (Maties) and Heinrich Schloms (Paarl) came second in 1:56:47. The senior Women’s Open was won by Helen Rabie (Paarl) and Desiree van Riet (Milnerton) in 2:09:02. In the junior events the u.14 boys’ category was won by Bradley Ruiters and Theo Moses, both from Paarl. The u.16 girls’ event was won by She-Earl de Wee and Abigail Stubbs (both from Paarl), with Luke Stowman and Daniel Buys (both from Paarl) winning the boys’ u.16 event. Paarlites Joseph Williams and Diviano Pieterson won the u.18 boys’ event.
