THE Kha ri Gude (Let us learn) Mass Literacy campaign, an initiative of the Department of Education in the Cape Winelands district, was launched recently.

Literacy classes will be conducted in Franschhoek (082-4877-266), Wellington (083-2762-027) and Paarl East (073-6202-087).

World-class learning materials have been developed with the support of Unesco in all 11 official languages as well as into Braille.

The programme is offered free of charge to the learners. At the moment the main aim of the campaign is to make people literate.

A co-ordinator is responsible for 20 supervisors, supervisors train ten volunteer educators and volunteer educators (who receive a monthly stipend of R1 300 for a six month period) are expected to recruit 15 learners. The church and other community structures are mostly used in selecting the educators.

Any volunteer educators previously involved, or learners who have completed the Kha ri Gude programme, are requested to contact the respective centre managers in the area, or phone P Hermanus at the Western Cape Education District Office on 023-348-4600.
