Entries awaited for wine list of the year

ENTRIES are awaited for the 2010 Diners Wine List of the Year Competition which gives recognition to those establishments whose wine lists not only provide a balanced range of wines, but also best complement the food on offer. The competition has played a major role for nearly 20 years in raising the standard of restaurant wine offerings. Diners Club Western Cape regional manager Jane Ledger said this year’s competition would focus on genuine value across the pricing spectrum. “The recession has forced many restaurateurs to creatively adapt their menus and wine lists to attract and retain diners by offering real value when it comes to presentation, quality and range. “While our judging criteria remain unchanged, the competition aims to recognise those establishments who understand that in the present economic climate a wine list has as much influence on the dining experience as the food itself and that the delivery of good value, at whatever price level, is paramount. “A winning wine list should not only offer wines that complement the offerings on the menu, but also provide enticing information to encourage diners to order wine with their food and to make their choices with confidence. Along with innovation and originality, format and presentation are key factors in the judging criteria.” The competition, which has been running for close on 20 years, is open to all those restaurants which accept the Diners Club card.
