2010-06-17

A LOCAL wine estate, Rhebokskloof, walked away with top honours at the Syrah du Monde International Competition, where the Rhebokskloof Black Marble Hill Reserve Syrah 2007 was named fifth best Shiraz in the world (receiving gold).

The 2006 vintage also walked away with gold during last year’s event.

Taking place in Chateau d’Ampuis, one of the jewels of the Renaissance, winemakers from all over the world as well as from all the French regions participated and competed against each other. A total of 387 wine samples from 27 countries were judged.

It was the ladies’ winemaking team of Rolanie Lotz (winemaker) and Karin Louw (vineyard expert) who perfected their formula, securing the honour for the South African wine producer.

Says Rhebokskloof Managing Director Anton du Toit, “We’re absolutely delighted to win this prestigious award. Our goal at Rhebokskloof is to produce superior world class wines, and it certainly looks as if we’re in the process of achieving this. Naturally, we’re very proud of our winemaker team.”

Rhebokskloof winemaker Lotz says she is enormously grateful that they received the award as it is a wonderful reward for all the hard work.

“Shiraz has always been my favourite cultivar as it is a very rewarding grape variety to work with. To have produced one of the top five in the world is an incredible honour.”

As a Shiraz specialist, the Rhebokskloof Black Marble Hill Reserve Syrah has always been the pride of the Rhebokskloof collection.
