Robber hides in freezer
2010-06-24
WHEN things got to hot to handle for a robber, he chose to cool off in a freezer at a local school. Security guards made this rather chilly discovery when they were alerted by an alarm at Gymnasium Primary School last weekend. An armed response official of ADT security company investigated the premises of the school, after the alarm had been activated in the tuck-shop. On inspection, Officer Willie Smith noticed that the burglar bars had been forced apart on one of the windows. Smith called for back-up from ADT and the police and contacted the headmaster of the school, Cassie Carstens. Another officer, Andrew Kamfer, arrived at the school, whereafter the two guards heard someone inside the building. Kamfer climbed through the window to inspect. A microwave and coffee machine had been unplugged and on further investigation, to Kamfer’s surprise, he discovered the alleged thief hiding in a freezer. The rather cold suspect was apprehended and handed over to Paarl police. Carstens said, “The security company was absolutely superb. From the time of the alarm going off their response time was excellent. They apprehended the suspect and handed him over to the police. “Thereafter they kept a close eye on the premises throughout the weekend.” Lee Bailey (21) appeared in court in connection with the attempted burglary.
