Money for schools
2010-06-24
EDUCATION can change the world - that is why the Executive Mayor and the mayoral committee decided to grant financial support to 43 non-feepaying schools and 14 other previously disadvantaged schools. An amount of R500 000 was made available even though schools are not a primary function of local government. This decision was made against the backdrop of the many requests received from schools for support. Even though the provincial education department is providing funding to schools, it is not sufficient to address all the needs. This is further complicated by the poverty-stricken areas these schools are situated in, the high rate of unemployment as well as the recent economic recession. On 28 May the Executive Mayor, Charmaine Manuel, hosted a ceremony where the respective school principals received the cheques and undertook to honour the commitment they have signed to use the funds for the purposes as stipulated in the memorandum of agreement. At this historic occasion the principals complimented the Executive Mayor for investing in the education of their learners and expressed the hope that this will be the start of a lasting partnership. .
