KWV responds to climate change
2010-07-01
KWV, wine and spirits producer, has acknowledged its responsibility to respond to the threats of climate change. They completed a baseline study in 2008 to determine KWV’s carbon footprint and immediately thereafter, several carbon reduction strategies were explored. Out of the five available communities-based off-set projects, KWV chose to plant trees in their surrounding communities to instill pride in their environment. They will have to ensure that the trees survive. KWV has thus partnered with award winning greening social enterprise, Food & Trees for Africa (FTFA) to distribute 2670 trees to low cost housing units in Drakenstein. This will sink their carbon emissions (1000 tons over the next 15 years) for the 2008 period and provide many benefits for the disadvantaged settlement. The distribution of KWV’s first 500 trees took place through the Trees for Homes programme othis week in newer housing areas in Mbekweni, like Project 2. Assistant Housing Manager for Project 2, Similo Tshali, welcomed KWV’s greening intervention, “This greening legacy from KWV will form part of the housing consumer programme which aims to encourage the new home-owners to be conscious about improving their environment through greening their property, keeping it clean and further changing their mindset towards engaging in sustainable environmental practices.”
