Local wine lists tops

THE 2005 Diners Club International Winelist of the Year Award winners were announced at an awards ceremony last week. Among the top 16 establishments were Bosman’s at the Grande Roche Hotel, The Sommelier Restaurant at the Winelands Santé‚ Hotel and Le Quartier Francais (Franschhoek).
Gold Awards were also presented to Bistro Allegro @ The Grande Roche Hotel, Marc’s Restaurant and Rhebokskloof Restaurant, all in Paarl.
The 2005 Diners Club International Winelist of the Year Awards, which have always been highly regarded by both the restaurant and wine industry, were officially re-launched in June this year after a break of two years to encourage food and wine-serving establishments to consistently improve the standards of the wine lists they offer their patrons.
Diners Club International re-introduced these Awards after re-formulating both the Award Categories and requirements, ensuring that they are in line with market and industry trends.
“What the judges have looked at are restaurateurs who go the extra mile in compiling their wine lists, creating lists which are in harmony with the food style of their enterprises, offering a variety of cultivars and breadth in terms of wine of origin areas including wines not only from the respected large companies but also from boutique and wineries,” says Michael Olivier, convener on behalf of Diners Club International.
The other superior establishments in the Western Cape were La Colombe, Zachary’s Restaurant, Au Jardin Restaurant, The Cellars-Hohenort Hotel, Villa Belmonte Manor House Hotel, The Twelve Apostles Hotel and Spa, Bushmans Kloof Die Ou Pastorie, The Plettenberg, De Oude Welgemoed, The Cape Colony Restaurant at The Mount Nelson, The Bahia Dos Vaqueiros Restaurant, Aubergine Restaurant and Farmhouse Hotel.
