Are these people forgotten?

Are these people forgotten?

2010-07-15

IT is heartbreaking to see the state in which the houses in Mbekweni’s Dube extension are in at the present moment.

I do not know if the project was abandoned or if there are any plans in the pipeline to complete the project. If memory serves me, the houses were never completed by the contractors. What are the current developments with regards to this project?

It gives a person no sense of pride to see the state that the houses are in. This makes people feel as if they are second class citizens and this is degrading.

To have a right to shelter is guaranteed by our constitution and that means that a person must have a decent and a proper living structure that is humane.

Concerned citizen Simpra ka Bafo

The municipal spokesperson responds: The building of Dube Village was part of the Hostel Development Programme of Province, together with B & C Hostels. Dube was built with the intention that these houses would cater for the overflow of the hostels. Unfortunately these houses were then “invaded” by residents of Mbekweni who described themselves as “borners” of the township, and that they because of this, should have first priority in the allocation of housing.

With regards to the completion of the project, we are dependent on Province for funding to complete the Hostel Development Program.

To this end the Mayor and Clr Petersen approached Province, and made a submission to them for release of funding to enable us to complete the project. We are still awaiting a reply in this regard from Province.
