Vineyards cements spot at the top
2010-07-15
THE first team of Vineyards Rugby Club cemented its place at the top of the log of the Paarl regional league by beating Riverstones 16-8 on Saturday. The game, which was played in a mud bath, suited Riverstones’ forward orientated style of rugby. They started strong by scoring in the first minutes after continuous driving from their big men. Soon after, they added a penalty to get a 8-0 lead. The score remained the same for most of the game until a three-pointer by Ricky Jordaan finally put Vineyards on the board after four missed opportunities. Vineyards’ first try by lock Zarier Nackerdien came after strong drives from their forwards, with Thaamir Moerat (lock) leading from the front. Moerat’s return to the starting line-up was ultimately the difference between the two evenly matched packs of forwards and he was rewarded with the man of the match accolade. With the scores tied at 8-8, Ricky Jordaan slotted a 50 metre drop goal to put Vineyards in the lead with three points. After a five metre scrum put Vineyards ahead, Timmy Rhoode (wing) crashed over on the blind side to seal the game 16-8. Riverstones’ try was scored by Marlon Swaan (flank). Christopher Mouwers added tree points with a penalty kick. On Saturday, it will be the clash of the title contenders when Vineyards go head to head with second placed Albions.
