Victory for Boland u.14 cyclists
2010-07-15
THE EMG Yorkshire Cycling Club traveled to Gariep in the Free State for the annual Eric van Enter Interprovincial Schools Competition as part of the Boland Cycling Union School’s Team. Yorkshire had a strong representation in the Boland Team, with cyclists like Daniston Perrins, Luc Green, Lee-Arthur Green, George Perrins, Jean Claude Jantjies, Graeme Ockhuis, Franklyn Stoffels, Angelo Diedericks, Dino Daniels, Xabiso Maxam, Shaun Gayiya, Michael Magongo, Byron Martin and Joshwill Davids. The riders in the different age categories, from u.10 to juniors, participated in the Team Time Trial, Road Race, Hill Climb and a Criterium (1km circuit route). The Boland Schools Team consisted of 25 riders, with a very strong u.14 team that showed some guts to win the overall u.14 title. Competition in this category was strong, especially between the reigning u.14 SA Road Champion, Jantjies, and the silver medalist at the SA Road Champ, Janrich Kotze (North West). But JC had a strong team in the likes of Graeme Ockhuis and Ivan Venter (younger brother of Jaco Venter riding for Team MTN). Over the three days of the event, Jantjies led in the front for Boland most of the times, with Kotze breathing down his neck. Eventually Jantjies won two of his four races, coming second in the other two. One of these races was the Criterium final on Day 3, which was the last event. The Boland riders attacked early in the race, especially Jantjies, Venter and Ockhuis. Kotze also stood strong, but in the end Jantjies came first, with Kotze second and Venter third. The Boland u.14 schools team won the overall title with 18 points and North West finished second with 12 points. North West repeated their performance of 2009 and took the Overall 2010 Eric van Enter title. In the under 16 category, Franklyn Stoffels and Angelo Diedericks of EMG Yorkshire also had a good road race and finished 15th and 11th respectively in a starting bunch of 80 riders.
