Youth learns multi-media skills

TEN local youngsters got the chance to learn more about multi-media from ten American journalism students.

Over the weekend of 26 and 27 June, the group worked on a multi-media reporting project, called Democracy Is. In 2009 Erna Smith, Professor of Professional Practice at the School of Journalism at the Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism Los Angeles, partnered with the Koinonia Community Centre and Drakenstein Express in Paarl and brought ten of her students to work with 12 young people on a multi-media reporting project around the theme of June 16. This year Professor Smith brought ten of her journalism students to Paarl to continue the project. The program, initiated by the US State Department, aims to engage young people around the world in a global discussion of democracy.

The program started in 2009 with a video contest in which young people were asked to make a three minute documentary illustrating what democracy meant to them.

The learners took photos and made videos to answer the central question about what democracy means. In addition the US State Department has donated eight Flip cameras for the programs to keep and use in future projects.

Said Eddie Williams, who heads Koinonia in Paarl, “Multi-media is the future and we are excited about this program. It is vital that we engage our young people in these courageous conversations since our youth are our future and the hope for a strong and vibrant citizenry.”

Williams said that Koinonia made a decision earlier in the year to use multi-media to strengthen and advance youth development and that the skills transfer will definitely help the organisation in the quest to ensure that they remain on the cutting edge of youth development.
