Better life for all...

IIN his letter last week die municipal manager of Drakenstein, Dr Sidima Kabanyane, says “The Truth must be Told”

You’re right Dr Kabanyane – let’s have the truth. How much did the PVA actually cost the TAXPAYERS of Drakenstein?

How many people actually benefited (as a percentage of the total population – your comment “on average thousands” could mean anything 2000 and 300 000)?

Who paid for the snacks consumed by councillors at the PVA?

Who has benefited most financially and politically from the whole exercise?

Was the correct tender process followed when deciding who would supply the flags which were hung in the streets?

How much did that full page advertisement in Paarl Post cost? The one you placed to flatter yourself, presumably at TAXPAYERS expense, regarding your apparently superior people skills and judgement concerning the upgrading of the municipal offices?

Would it not have been more prudent to have published details of the expenditure on the Drakenstein municipal website to prove that you have been unfairly criticised?

Your criticise TAXPAYERS who “selfishly did not view the importance of having a PVA in Drakenstein”.

TAXPAYERS pay tax and expect to see the taxes used wisely in the expansion and maintenance of infrastructure, provision of services etc.

The Council could not possibly have expected a standing ovation from TAXPAYERS when it announced its intention to host a R3 million fan park after having invested R10 million in a botched attempt to market the Drakenstein area as a base camp. All this on top of excessive rates increases in the past years.

There is a homeless lady, who urinates and defecates in public at the electrical substation opposite the Paarl Fire Station and, probably sleeps in a graveyard or shop doorway at night – I wonder how she feels about those who selfishly insisted on having a R3 million fan park.

I wonder how far R13 million might have gone into expanding the Night Shelter, erecting public toilets and building the houses you regularly promise your electorate?

It is high time that council regains its focus – leave the marketing to businesses that would benefit from the marketing; and the entertainment to local theatres, restaurants, bars, pubs, shebeens and sports clubs.

Drop the attitude (TAXPAYERS pay your salary), stop congratulating yourselves, and get to work on providing the infrastructure and sanitation services which you have neglected.... or expect more of the same.
