“WE will not tolerate this kind of behaviour.” These were the words of Samuel Makabana, Mbekweni chairperson of the South African Civics Organisation, after three police officers narrowly escaped death, while their vehicle was severely damaged, when they were attacked by a mob. The incident took place in OR during the recent spate of attacks on foreigners. While the officers, of which two were women, were trying to maintain the peace, they were attacked by a stone throwing mob. The saving grace of the officers was the unflinching assistance of a woman who led them to the safety of her home, while police reinforcements were summoned. One officer was slightly injured, while the other two were highly traumatised by the incident. “For years we fought for a proper police station in Mbekweni, and now that we have one, look what the public is doing now,” said Makabana. “These officers were attacked while trying to safeguard the community and this behaviour is unacceptable.” The community is encouraged to contact the Mbekweni police if they can identify any of the guilty parties who were responsible for the attack. * In the meantime, station commander Lt/Col Cornelius Geldenhuys has thanked the public for the general decline of crime in the area. “Although attacks such as the above-mentioned one were isolated, crime in general is down in Mbekweni.” He added that during the past 54 days there have been no murders in the area, bringing this total close to their record of 72 murder free days. “This is a clear indication that our policy of visible policing is paying off. We would like to thank the public for refraining from acts of violence.”
