THE Drakenstein Heritage Foundation (DHF) presents its popular annual winter lecture series every Thursday in August at the Hout Street Gallery in Paarl.
The lectures will again cover a varied and interesting range of topics that explore different aspects of local heritage and culture.
The first lecture in the series of four (on 5 August at 19:30 for 20:00) will be presented by Ebrahim Rhode, winner of the 2010 Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport ministerial award for his contribution towards public awareness/documentation of heritage resources.
Rhode will talk about the founding of what is probably the first Islamic rural enclave on the False Bay coast in the early 19th Century.
He is the former principal of the Muslim Primary School in the Strand and joined a research project of UWC on researching slave roots.
) On 12 August Prof John Parkington, Emeritus Professor of Archaeology at UCT, will talk on Shorelines, Strandlopers and Shell Middens.
) On Thursday 19 August, Dr Hans Fransen, will talk on Anton Anreith and Louis-Michel Thibault and the “Battle of the Styles”.
) On Thursday 26 August, Dr Peter Merrington, Professor Extraordinaire at the Dept of English of the University of the Western Cape, will talk on 1910 and the Pageant of South African Union, in a fitting tribute to the centenary of the Union of South Africa.
