WHILE municipalities have spent thousands of rands on decorations, flags and banners hanging everywhere, thousands of unemployed South Africans are sitting around freezing in the cold.
Municipalities are literally getting away with murder in a system which allows them to deduct arrears from pre-paid electricity purchases at will. One would have understood if 25% and even 50% was deducted from prepaid electricity purchases, but they are deducting up to 90%.
This means that someone buying electricity worth R40 worth would only get 9,2 units which is hardly enough to last through a cold winter’s night.
If one dares to confront the municipality it is laughed off (“we are allowed to do it, take us to court”). Shame on all politicians, because at the next election you all are quick to run to us poor souls for a vote.Barend van der Westhuizen
