Heritage lecture series

THE annual August lecture series presented by the Drakenstein Heritage Foundation at the Hout Street Gallery in Paarl will take place on Thursday 12 August when Prof John Parkington, Emeritus Professor of Archaeology at UCT, will talk on Shorelines, Strandlopers and Shell Middens.

He has been researching the evolutionary history of San hunters and gatherers for a few decades. Coastal shell middens have been one of his focuses, rock paintings another.

Southern Africa has a rich history of marine food use extending back at least 150 000 years, which takes us back to the origins of our own species Homo sapiens. Sapiens means wise, could there be a connection between eating seafood and being smart?

) On Thursday 19 August, Dr Hans Fransen, will talk on Anton Anreith and Louis-Michel Thibault and the “Battle of the Styles”.

He recently retired after a long career dedicated to the arts and conservation and is the author of several reference books including Three Centuries of South African Art (1982) and Old Towns and Villages of the Cape (2006).

His topic will investigate how Anreith, a talented sculptor from Baroque Germany, and Thibault, a highly trained architect from Neo-classical France, came to collaborate at the Cape in the years round 1800.

Despite their vastly diverging artistic backgrounds, they respected each other’s work and learnt to adapt to each other’s style.

) On Thursday 26 August, Dr Peter Merrington, Professor Extraordinaire at the Dept of English of the University of the Western Cape, will talk on 1910 and the Pageant of South African Union, in a fitting tribute to the centenary of the Union of South Africa.

Lectures cost R25 per lecture or R80 for the series. For enquiries, phone Hout Street Gallery on 021-872-5030.
