Plastic pollution

Plastic pollution

2010-08-12

I WAS shocked to see metres of yellow plastic banners drifting down the Berg River yesterday morning. These banners are made from polyethylene which has a large carbon footprint and can take decades to disintegrate in a natural environment.

One can only shudder to think of the devastation these banners will cause to river habitats and even sea life as they reach the open ocean. Not to mention the general pollution in Paarl.

I would like to know what the agreement is between the school who put plastic ribbons around trees and the Paarl Municipality in this regard.

Who is responsible for ensuring that no plastic bunting ends up in the streets and environment? Save this town from organised pollution.
