THE annual August lecture series presented by the Drakenstein Heritage Foundation at the Hout Street Gallery in Paarl will take place today when Prof John Parkington, Emeritus Professor of Archaeology at UCT, will talk on Shorelines, Strandlopers and Shell Middens.
He has been researching the evolutionary history of San hunters and gatherers for a few decades. Coastal shell middens have been one of his focuses, rock paintings another. Southern Africa has a rich history of marine food use extending back at least 150 000 years, which takes us back to the origins of our own species Homo sapiens.
) On 19 August, Dr Hans Fransen, will talk on Anton Anreith and Louis-Michel Thibault and the “Battle of the Styles”.
) On 26 August, Dr Peter Merrington, Professor Extraordinaire at the Dept of English of UWC, will talk on 1910 and the Pageant of South African Union, in a fitting tribute to the centenary of the Union of South Africa.
Lectures cost R25 per lecture or R80 for the series. For enquiries, phone Hout Street Gallery on 021-872-5030.
