A MAN from Mbekweni was arrested on Friday in possession of various items which are used to clone bank cards. Moeketsi Mpulanyana (40), who was allegedly acting suspiciously in the vicinity of ATM machines in Brackenfell, caught the attention of an off-duty police officer. The police officer immediately alerted more officers, who studied his movements for a day. He was later apprehended in a house in Silimela Street, Mbekweni. Various bank cards, a laptop, a cloning device and documentation relevant to bank card fraud, were found in his possession. He appeared in the Paarl Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday on charges of fraud. * A spokesperson for Wellington Police, W/O Celeste Barkhuizen, said that the station has recently been inundated with complaints from the public about internet fraud. More than 30 such cases have been registered there. Members of the public often become victim to this type of fraud when they open emails from what looks like their bank, asking them to re-register their banking details. “Banks will never ask for personal information such as passwords and pin numbers to be exposed on the internet.”
