WHAT a shame that the Municipality has not got the guts to move the hawkers.
Why are we coddling these people? They are there selling illegally, they have chased away many customers and more than a few shops have closed because of these knuckleheads.
What rights do they have, really?
I used to live in Lilongwe, Malawi, and they had the same problem there.
The local government set up an alternative site (just like Paarl has), gave them a deadline and then went in with a police truck and arrested everyone who was still there and confiscated all their merchandise.
You know what? No more vendors clogging up the street and they have adapted quite well to their site. Finish and klaar.
Let’s give these guys the boot and quit worrying about hurting their feelings.
