THE Independent Complaints Directorate (ICD) has found substance to allegations that crime statistics at police stations in Paarl, George and Oudtshoorn have been manipulated.

This was revealed by the Western Cape Minister for Community Safety, Adv Lennit Max, who has launched a full scale investigation into allegations of crime statistics manipulation at various police stations.

Last year it came to light that more than 50 rape cases, involving children as young as four, were allegedly never investigated or even written up by police officers in Paarl over a period of two years.

This was allegedly done because these stations did not want their crime figures to look bad.

This week Max continued to take a swing at these stations.

“When crime stats are manipulated, it skews the picture and ultimately affects service delivery, as police resources are allocated according to the crime levels in the area. This in essence robs communities of their right to services and we cannot allow this to happen.”

Max said that they have identified suspects and are in the process of interviewing them about the manipulation scam.

“Those found guilty of such misconduct will face severe consequences.”
