I HAVE observed the construction/maintenance project on the eastern footpath of Paarl Main Street from southern Paarl to Lady Grey Street with interest over the last few weeks and must note that I am really shocked and concerned about the lack of environmental control measures implemented.
There are huge volumes of soil spread out in the kerb channels and on the footpaths all along the length of the project that will only be washed down the nearest storm water drain with the first rainfall.
The excess earth washed into the drainage system will eventually have to be cleaned out at unnecessary costs, to the tax payer, that will by far exceed the implementation costs of good silt control measures.
Is an Environmental Manager involved in this big project?
