Cash heist in Paarl

Cash heist in Paarl

2005-09-29

A GUARD turned around with a drop-safe in hand in Paarl on Monday morning and found himself staring into the muzzle of a firearm.

Christo Bailey thought he was going to die.

Realising what he was facing, he threw himself to the ground as the robber snatched the safe containing R64 000 from his hands.

Christo and colleague Wilston Johannes were doing their routine round of collecting money from Paarl businesses when they stopped at CTM in Lower Lady Grey Street.

Johannes was in the Fidelity Guard van, when he too found a pistol held to his head.

He saw Bailey on the ground and the suspect with the money box move towards the gate when his own pistol was pulled from the holster at his side.

As the robbers ran to the getaway vehicle, Johannes jumped from the van and made for the entrance of CTM.

Shouting “armed robbery, fall down, fall down” he alerted the security guards in the building.

The robbers had meanwhile fled in a red bakkie with a CA registration number that had been parked in Tekstiel Street during the heist.

Policemen patrolling heard Johannes and immediately broadcast the incident.

Vehicles rushed to block entrances to Paarl when Insp Bernard Swart noticed a bakkie fitting the description in Mbekweni.

He turned around, to find the bakkie abandoned in Mochu Street. The
five suspects escaped.
