BEWARE of those bearing gifts - especially when there is a “holiday prize” involved.
A few months ago I was contacted by phone at work, by someone saying she just wanted to ask me a few questions as part of a “survey”.
Eventually she said that my participation had put me in line for a prize of a holiday.
Lo and behold, she later phoned back to say that I was indeed a winner and invited me to the celebration event where “all the winners” would gather.
Once we got there, the hard sell really started. I was shocked when everyone present was told to put down the sum of R25 000, to actually get the holiday prize. Credit card facilities were available on the spot.
When we objected, the amount suddenly dropped to R12 000 after “consultation with the manager.” An annual payment of R2000 was required as well.
There were a number of older people present, who appeared to succumb to the high pressure sales talk.
Eventually it became clear that the whole process was a clever ruse to disguise the sale of time share.
I was astounded - even more so when last week I was once again invited to a similar event.
Oh well, I suppose there is a sucker born every minute.
