A youth development project aimed at developing skills of young people living in rural areas started recently in Drakenstein.
The National Department of Rural Development and Land Reform has initiated a two year programme, National Rural Youth Service Corps (NARYSEC), aimed at empowering unemployed rural youth between the ages 18 to 35 years in rural wards to improve job opportunities.
These young people will be expected to undergo an intensive training programme at participating FET colleges and government departments, based on the needs identified during an induction programme at the start of the programme.
They will be expected to work in their communities at the end of the two years by providing the relevant services in local socio-economic development.
As local and district municipalities play a pivotal role in supporting and implementing this programme, it is expected of municipalities to perform activities like distribution and collection of application forms, assist in short listing candidates, and assist with the interviews of candidates and with provision of required resources.
The Rural Development Unit within the Strategic Services Directorate of Drakenstein Municipality will be responsible for the implementation of this programme in the Drakenstein area. The successful applicants will be placed with the municipality for the duration of the two year period.
Apart from attending the block training sessions the successful candidates will also be tasked with activities such as social profiling within their respective wards.
