Great racing during Super Cycle two-day tour

THE 5th event in the Drakenstein Super Cycle Road Series, the 2-day cycle tour, delivered some good racing for the local riders of Boland and Western Province this past weekend in Paarl. It was Charles Solomons of Team Daikin GU who showed his dominance from the start and eventually won the 2-day/3 stages cycle tour. The tour consisted of a 6km Individual Time Trial, 50km circuit race and a 125km mass start road race. Solomons rode a great time trial on Saturday morning and won stage 1 in a time of 8min 18,60 seconds (36,40 seconds faster than his nearest rival Edward Greene). Third fastest time in the time trial was set by Moolman Welgemoed (Daikin GU). Stage 2 of the tour was won by Chris Botha, when he won the sprint from Theuns van der Bank of Cape Town Market. On Sunday morning, before the start of stage 3, Solomons had a lead of 44 seconds over his teammate Moolman Welgemoed. After a hard fought race, Solomons crossed the finish line 36 seconds before the bunch to win stage 3 and secure the 2-day tour The overall winner in the Veteran Category was Johan Kruger (3hours 58min 56seconds). Second was Justin Maltby and third Steve Benham. The u.16 Category was won by Angelo Diedericks (EMG Yorkshire- 4:02:41,34. Second was Ivan Venter (Maties CC) and third Brent van Rooyen (Rhadsport CC). The u.14 category was won by Jean Claude Jantjies (EMG Yorkshire - 4:05:50,09). Second was Lee-Arthur Green and third Graeme Ockhuis, also from EMG Yorkshire Cycling Academy. The next event in the Drakenstein Super Cycle Series will be a 3-day tour in and around Paarl from 24-26 September 2010. A funride for the not so serious cyclists and scholars will also be hosted. Die dag was baie goed georganiseer, met stalletjies, wynproe en selfs musiekvertonings wat aan toeskouers ’n heerlike dag vol opwinding gebied het.
