DA takes Franschhoek

The Democratic Alliance gave the ANC a hiding last week during the Stellenbosch Ward 1 municipal by-election in Franschhoek. Councillor Aldridge Frazenburg (left), drew 63,29% of the votes in the ward, which was held by the ANC until the recent resignation of councillor Gordon Pheiffer. The ANC support has dropped from 48% in 2006, to 28% (556 votes). In Franschhoek South, DA support remained at 90% of the votes (532 votes at the town hall), while in Groendal, the DA increased its support from less than 16% to 51,9% (723 votes). The Stellenbosch Civics got 172 votes (8,67%). The voter turnout was 51,74%. Frazenburg was previously a proportional DA councillor for the Stellenbosch Municipality.
