A HANDFUL of strikers disrupted schools in the area this week. About 30 striking teachers descended upon La Rochelle High School on Monday morning, with the aim of preventing teaching staff from entering the premises. But La Rochelle staff managed to find their way onto school property and once inside, the school was secured and it was business as usual. The strikers threatened to return on Tuesday and cause havoc, but instead they disrupted classes at New Orleans Secondary School. Learners were advised to leave the premises, in fear for their safety. During the two week civil servant strike, Paarl has in general fared better than other towns, with most services continuing. Various schools in Paarl East and Mbekweni joined the strike for one or two days in solidarity with their striking counterparts, but teaching mostly continued as normal. And in spite of horror stories at medical establishments throughout the country of deaths and neglect due to striking health workers, service delivery continued unhindered at Paarl Hospital. Currently unions are still mulling over whether to accept the latest wage increase of 7,5% and an R800 housing subsidy which the government put on the table on Monday, or continue their demands for a wage increase of 8,6% and R1 000 housing allowance.
