Bowling club joins Boland
2005-09-29
THE Paarl Bowling Club recently decided to affiliate itself with the Boland Bowling Association.
This move marks the end of an era with the Paarl club breaking a relationship of 71 years with the Western Province Bowling Association.
“The decision to move to Boland was largely due to geograhical reasons. Being a part of the Boland will cut out a lot of travelling,” explained the club’s president Glennys Mountford.
Mountford made history herself last year when she became the first woman ever to be elected as president of the Paarl Club.
Being re-elected for this year means she won’t only be the last president of Paarl serving under the auspices of Western Province, but also the first president to preside over the club as part of the Boland bowling fraternity.
The Paarl club’s honours boards display many accolades obtained by its members over the years, the most recent being the women’s Muter Cup during the 2003/2004 season.
Honorary Life Member Marie Retief (93) was President of Western Province Women’s Bowling Association (WPWBA) from 1972 to 1974 which means she is also an Honorary Life Member of the WPBA.
Due to the extent of the Boland province the BBA is divided into several zones. The Paarl Bowling Club will form part of the zone which incorporates the clubs of Wellington, Worcester, KWV, Tulbagh and Ceres.
The club invites all interested players to join and plan a Fun Day in November to introduce the sport to beginners.
Interested players can contact Divvie (082-376-1308), Glennys (863-3117) or Almarie (872-1982.
The club also wishes to thank Ewald Keyser and the group of municipal workers who maintain their greens.
Making the grade
The Paarl club’s vice-president, Divvie van Deventer, was chosen to represent the Western Cape Correctional Services team.
The team will compete at the national championships in Kroonstad from 24 to 29 October.
Van Deventer will be joined by another local player, MP Olivier of the KWV Bowling Club.
